A banshee is a spirit commonly depicted in Irish folklore. On the surface, a banshee is usually an old woman who heralds the coming of imminent death. In literature, a banshee is used as a plot device, usually appearing to share an obscure omen at a time when both the main character and the audience don't know what to make of it. They may not even know that it is an omen, let alone one of death. But a banshee need not take the form of an elderly woman. Any wailing person or beast that shows up unexpectedly with a message may indeed by a banshee.
